About Moko See Moko Do
Moko See Moko Do (MSMD) is a practice that treats technology and toi like the same tool set: both carve space, both carry story, and both can steward people through change. We work at the meeting point of carving, code and wā — the attention and time we give to each other and the kaupapa. Our tools may be chisels, cameras and keyboards, but the thing we keep returning to is tikanga: moving with respect, clarity and care so that people remain whole inside the work.
MSMD began as a discipline for getting things done in a way that still felt human. We wanted a way to move from kōrero to mahi without losing the mauri that was present in the first conversation. The answer became a set of very small, very practical protocols we call the Uruoa Star. The “star” part matters because it’s a navigation device: five simple points we can always see, no matter where we stand. Start small and start now. Bring care to the room. Make roles and progress visible. Close loops quickly, then repeat. And leave the door open so others can join and contribute.
This approach lets MSMD support a surprising spread of work. Some days we’re shaping a pare, lighting a set, or cutting a sequence; other days we’re committing code, turning up a server, or sketching a data model. The through line is the same: carry forward the purpose, keep people safe, and ship real progress in small, frequent moves. That rhythm is how momentum is built. It’s also how trust is built, because people can see and feel the increments.
We use that same rhythm in the way we share knowledge. Wherever possible, the artefacts are public: a working demo, a changelog, an open brief, an accessible repository. We specifically prefer documents that other people can fork and run — not just watch — because participation is the fastest way to learn. “See → do” isn’t just a slogan; it’s a structure. The moment something is visible and runnable, more people can carry it, critique it and improve it.
MSMD is not a brand looking for clients; it’s a capability looking for collaborators. We value small crews that can self-steer, where rangatiratanga is expressed through service — making it easier for others to do their best work. That means we keep our stack light, pick tools that are accessible, and remove unnecessary gates. It also means we make room for reflection: after a sprint or a show, we ask what we learned and what we’ll do differently in the next round. Those notes become the next navigation marks.
