The dark accounting. The honest log before the commitment.
Whiro is position 3 of the Compass: the log entry created after the intention is named and before the commitment is made. In carving terms, Whiro is the stop-cut at the governance level. Before material is removed, the boundary is scored. Before action is committed, the honest state is logged.
The Whiro chip has a specific format because the specific format prevents specific evasions. Each field exists because there is a known way practitioners soften the truth, and the field makes that softening visible.
| Field | What it requires |
|---|---|
| Event / Chip | What happened, in one sentence. Not what it means. What occurred. |
| Bare Fact | What an external observer would record. No interpretation, no narrative. Written as if by a stranger with no prior relationship to the situation. |
| Evidence | External verification: a document, a photograph, a measurement, a log entry that exists independently of memory. |
| Repercussions | Near, medium, and far. Honest, especially the uncomfortable far one, which is where the pattern's real cost lives and which practitioners reliably under-report. |
| Remedy | Specific. Actionable. Assigned to one named person, never a committee, never "the team". |
| Status | Open, in progress, or closed. Updated at each session. |
| Learnings | What the system now knows that it did not know before. Not how the practitioner feels about the event. What was learned. |
A valid chip passes one test: a person with no prior knowledge of the situation or the kaupapa can read the entry and reach the same conclusion, without explanation.
When the session was too turbulent to log in real time, no chip is created. The gap in the archive is not a failure of the archive. It is a reading of the instrument: the practitioner did not have enough whakarata to name what happened before it was absorbed. The absence of a chip is a chip about the absence.
This is how the ledger stays honest over time. Not by recording everything. By recording what was true, and leaving a visible gap where nothing could be honestly recorded.
